3. Start an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) Group as Soon as You Can
Again, in your back matter, insert a page asking for readers to join your group, explaining they will receive a free copy of your e-book and all you require is an honest review from them. Saying that you’re giving them a free book in exchange for their review, will get you into deep water with Amazon.

Why is a Book Description important?

Further to our blog on writing A Killer Non-Fiction Book Description, this piece is tailored to the needs of novelists and How-To Write The Definitive Fiction Book Description.
Let’s be clear what a book description is NOT! It is not a summary of your book, nor is it something that is cobbled together just to fill the space. Your potential reader loves your book cover – that’s why they clicked on it. You now have to encourage them to click the BUY button. Usually, a great book description will do this! 
If it sucks, then the reader will move on to another book.
Nearly all book descriptions are written in the present tense.

How to Create a Fiction Book Description

First paragraph

FIRST SENTENCE
The first line needs to contain the hook. It has to pique your reader’s interest so that they have no choice but to read on. When a reader lands on your Amazon page, only the first few lines of your book description will show up, before it gets cut off. You don’t have many words to convince a potential reader to click ‘Read More’. 
To best achieve this, you need to include all the following in the first line:
  • WHAT THE MAIN CHARACTER WANTS
  • WHAT IS IN HIS WAY?
  • WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IF HE DOESN’T GET WHAT HE WANTS
SECOND SENTENCE
This sentence needs to be short. What has our hero been doing? Example: “Helen Taylor never saw the break-up coming”.
THIRD SENTENCE
In this sentence, we need to know what the protagonist’s life has been like up till now. Example: “With her job of 15 years no longer available, she has no option but to move back to her sleepy English village”.
FOURTH SENTENCE
This last sentence in the first paragraph contains the Inciting Incident, an event that occurs, in relation to your protagonist, near to the beginning of your story, which sets that story moving in a different direction. The word ‘inciting’ is used because the event which occurs incites your protagonist towards a new course of action.
Example: “But when the spaceships appeared in every major city, Daniel knew the glowing orb was more than a myth; it was life and death”.

Second Paragraph

FIRST SENTENCE
Here, the reader needs to know how the protagonist is dealing emotionally with this incident. Example: “Following the clues to a shady warehouse, Tara wonders if she’s ready to face the dark truth”.
With most novels, the reader needs a protagonist who they care about. Even in the book description, readers need to feel the hero is struggling.
SECOND SENTENCE
In the hook, we knew there was going to be an obstacle. This is it! It thwarts the hero from getting what she wants. Example: “But when an awful secret spills her army apart, Princess Evelyn may have no choice but to face her terror alone to keep her mother’s neck from the axe”. Keep it vague. By saying ‘may’, it might happen or it might not. Keep it to the anatagonist and hero’s journeys.
THIRD SENTENCE
This is where you need an even bigger cliffhanger. The protagonist or everyone might die.

Call To Action

CEMENTING THE DEAL WITH A CALL TO ACTION
Remind the reader of the book again and its genre with the call to action (CTA). Example: “If you like amateur sleuths, small town gossip and plenty of red herrings, you’ll love this laugh-out-loud cozy from Janet Wise”.
Some authors will go further. For instance, a thriller writer might say in the CTA  “If you like Lee Child and David Baldacci, you’ll love this tense, suspenseful thriller from Colin Jones”.

The start of a new year is always a good time to collect one’s thoughts and plan ahead. In today’s blog, we’re going to be concentrating on 9 steps to ensure your writing career is more profitable and successful in 2024.

1. Edit Your Manuscript

You’ve completed writing your new novel or non-fiction work and the manuscript is sitting on your laptop. This is where you start to self-publish your book. Presenting a high quality book for your readers without plot holes, factual mistakes, grammar and punctuation errors is critical. 
The first thing to do is self-edit your manuscript. Read through it numerous times, smoothing any rough edges, amending typos and ensuring the narrative flows with ease.
If you can, find a group of beta readers. These are trusted allies who will critique your manuscript, suggest alterations and find other errors before your book is unleashed on the general public. Then, you’re ready to hand over your work to a professional editor. Ensure you find one who is knowledgeable and experienced in the genre in which you’re writing.

2. Adding a Title

I guess by name, you’d have the title of your book well and truly nailed, but if you are still a little unsure, now is the time to settle on it. If you’re finding this challenging, consider using Reedsy’s book title generator for thousands of possibilities or explore ChatGPT 3.5, the free AI software.
In general, fiction titles normally have one or two word titles that sound intriguing. For non-fiction, you would usually have a title and subtitle, which you would litter with keywords. 

3. Formatting

To enhance your readers’ experience, a well formatted book is essential. Many books are uploaded to Amazon and other platforms with no thought about how the inside looks. Poorly laid out book interiors are a stark reminder that unformatted books risk poor reviews and, quite honestly, when a potential reader views a sample of text that has not gone through the formatting process, they’ll look to buy elsewhere.
When I first started self-publishing, I formatted my books using Word. It’s a steep learning curve and I found it frustrating and enormously time consuming. But it’s possible, if you are able to devote the time to it.
I now use formatting software called Atticus, which greatly simplifies the whole process and you can acquire it for a one-off purchase of $147 + taxes.

4. Keywords and Categories

Ensure that these two beauties are optimised.
Keywords: These are the words/phrases that people use when they search for books like yours. For example, a keto diet cookbook may have these keywords – “weight loss plan” and “how to eat healthily”. Learn more about keywords HERE.

5. Stunning Book Cover Design

You’ve heard the phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’. That doesn’t apply to book publishing! Your book cover gives your potential reader their first impression of your work, so it must attract them, giving your audience a sneek preview of the adventure awaiting them.
Each genre has its own specific cover design. For example, thrillers often use dark colours and unsettling photos, while romance novels generally use illustrated covers with shades of red, pink, and purple.
My advice is to steer clear of do-it-yourself covers unless you have graphic design experience and know what readers of your genre expect from a cover. At the lower end of the spectrum is Fiverr.com, where you can pick up an e-book and print cover for less than $50. Always choose a Top Rated Seller with over 500 five star ratings to ensure you’re getting a quality professional. Getcovers.com are also a great company to deal with and sensibly priced. At the higher end of the price range, you have designers who know all about light, balance, shadow, typography, perspective and blending. They will design your book from scratch and will know what works and what doesn’t.

6. Effective Book Description

This is what you find next to your book on online platforms like Amazon and Kobo. It’s what your book is about. It’s not a summary of the contents. It’s ad copy designed to whet the readers’ appetites and get them to buy. Another talent in the indie author’s skill set is to write ad copy.
A lot of authors disregard this but it is the second most important part of the selling process after the cover. If they love your cover (and they will!), the description will need to persuade them that they have to buy your book.
The basics for writing a great book description are:
  1. Hook readers with a headline. This has to pique their interest and make them read on.
  2. Introduce the main idea but don’t summarise. Give a brief description of the central conflicts (fiction) or the problem for the reader and how you can solve it (non-fiction)
  3. Leave them wanting more. End on a question, a hint at a twist or even an outright cliffhanger.
  4. Add a Call to Action (CTA). Prompt the reader to Buy Now!

7. Different Formats

There is enormous scope to earn an extra income apart from e-books and paperbacks by branching out into new formats like hard covers, large print and audiobooks. Hard covers and large print require new ISBNs and covers, so there is some extra expense involved, but not too daunting.
Audiobooks, on the other hand, can be a more expensive avenue to go down, but do some research and see if this fits with your goals and ambitions.

8. Using Different Platforms

Whilst Amazon is the largest book retailer in the world (so who wouldn’t want their books shown here?), you might like to consider other outlets such as Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. The Amazon platform doesn’t reach everybody in the world, which means that other online self-publishing platforms do! Consider the time it will take to learn about these new platforms and whether that is a good use of your time when you first start out in self-publishing.
For those new to self-publishing, Amazon is the best place to start. If you sign up to KDP Select, you can run price promotions and add your book to Kindle Unlimited, where more readers can find it plus you get paid via read-through.

9. Marketing

Sadly, your book will not sell by itself. It will need a push! It’s always wise to:
  1. Build a team of ARC readers. This stands for Advance Reader Copies or Advance Review Copies. In my case, it’s an Advance Readers Club. These are folks you ask to become reviewers for your books. You send them a free copy of your e-book and ask them to read it and then leave an honest review. Always have a section in your back matter asking for people to join your team.
  2. Build a website and email list. An author website is a great advantage and you can incorporate your email sign-up landing page on the site. You can also offer reader magnets (free items in exchange for an email address) in your front/back matter to start building your email list, which needs to be a priority on your To Do list.
  3. Consider paid advertising. There are many ways to advertise for free but Amazon Ads can be super effective at getting your books into the hands of readers and increasing your sales. For your ads to perform effectively, it needs time to learn how to do this and to manage them.

What are the pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing?  Do you take the traditional book publishing route or do you publish the book yourself?
In fact, the choice doesn’t have to be so stark.  There are many writers out there known as hybrid authors, who do both.  They have books with well-known publishing houses and have also chosen to self-publish.  
So what’s the best avenue for you to pursue?  We’ll take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages right here, right now! It boils down to what matters most to you!  

Traditional Publishing

Traditional publishing involves submitting your manuscript to agents who then attempt to find a publishing company to take on your work.  This route may be your preferred option if:
  • You are solely focused on writing and creating new books.  In that case, you might  want to hand all the responsibilities like editing and marketing to the publishing house you sign up to.  They have a large team behind them who will publish and promote your book.
  • You want no upfront costs at all!  In fact, you will receive an advance, which means you’ll benefit from a guaranteed sum before the book is published.  This, of course, will be clawed back from the sales of your book.  Once this has been repaid, the royalty agreed is yours.  Royalty rates are low and range from 7% to 25% depending on who the author is.  Royalty cheques are issued about every 6 months depending on the publishing house.
  • Prestige and kudos are important to you. For some authors, they need validation that their work is good enough and a mainstream publisher would answer that need.  Literary awards, too, are more likely to be achieved through a traditional publisher because many prizes are not even open to independent authors.  Some writers reckon they’ve ‘arrived’ once they obtain a publishing deal from a large publishing house.
  • You’re happy to wait a long time, possibly years, for your book to be published.  There is a long laborious process to go through in order to get your book published involving literary agents, signing contracts and negotiating advances.  That’s if you haven’t received a large number of rejection letters in the meantime.  
  • You don’t mind signing away the rights to your book.  Once a contract is signed, a publisher may have the rights to your book until the day you die and 70 years after that.  Now that’s a long time!  When it comes to signing contracts, ensure you get all the help you can to avoid costly pitfalls.

Self-Publishing

Self-publishing is a much more ‘hands-on’ process where the author is responsible for every step of the publishing and, indeed, marketing process.  That does not necessarily mean that the author has to do everything his or herself because these days much of the work like designing book covers, formatting and editing can be outsourced to professionals all around the world.
This may appeal to you if:
  • You like the idea of having full creative control from day one.  With this comes the responsibility of learning how to self-publish, creating book covers, formatting your manuscript, finding editors and marketing your book among many other tasks.  Mainstream publishers have the final say on your book whether you like what they do or not.
  • You want your manuscript uploaded in the shortest possible time.  You can load your book on to Amazon’s platform, for example, and it’ll be ready for readers to buy within 72 hours.  It’s very quick.

  • You want to earn more money from the sales of your books.  Royalty rates are generally much higher with 70% being at the top end for specifically priced e-books.  The wait for payment to your bank account is around 2 months.  If you sell e-books direct from your website, then payment is immediate.
  • You want to change tack half way through a project. You can stop writing a book and start another one and then go back to the original one later on if you wish.  The key word here when it comes to self-publishing, is flexibility.  If you are daunted by deadlines that are imposed by traditional publishers and the pressure that goes with that, then maybe you are better suited to self-publishing. What you don’t want to do is to have to repay the advance from a traditional publisher if you decide it’s not for you.
  • You want to own all the rights to your books.

Whilst print books outsell e-books worldwide by a factor of 4 to 1,  the demand for digital books is still a force to be reckoned with and there are strategies that writers can use to earn more royalties.  Authors continue to publish e-books en masse but spending a few moments checking out your KDP Pricing page could save you money. 
This is relevant for authors who have included any images on their pages.  The obvious example is an image-heavy cookery book or children’s books.  But this can apply to even a few images that you’ve added to your book.

Checking Your Delivery Fees

Log in to KDP and choose your book.  Hover over the ellipsis and click on ‘Edit eBook pricing’.

You can see straight away under Pricing, Royalty and Distribution that you have a choice whether to go for a 35% or 70% royalty.  If you opt for the higher rate, you will pay a delivery fee for Amazon to download the e-book to your customer.
In the example above, the delivery fee is $1.03.
The royalty rate is calculated thus: 70% Royalty Rate x (List Price – VAT if applicable – Delivery Costs) = Royalty.

Does It Affect The Quality Of The Image?

There are a number of print formats that authors can consider.  The obvious choice is paperbacks but let’s not forget hardbacks and large print books.  In this article, we’ll be looking at how you can make more money from large print versions. 
With e-books, it’s fairly simple to increase the size of the font and do any number of things such is the technology but with print-on-demand it requires a new format.

There's a Market for Large Print Books

Top selling author and creative influencer, Joanna Penn’s co-written book Love, Second Time Around sold really well in the first year in Large Print – 52% ebook, 12% Print, 36% Large Print.  Over a third of readers opted for the Large Print version! 
Large Print appeals to:
  • Seniors who are visually impaired but prefer Large Print to audiobooks
  • The dyslexic who find it harder to read standard book fonts 
  • People, who after a hard day’s work in front of a computer screen, find some solace in Large Print to prevent excessive eye strain
  • Those reading on public transport where all the constant motion can make it difficult  reading smaller print
Why wouldn’t you be interested in earning more money by investing in a Large Print format?
My strategy at the moment is to sell e-books and print versions (paperback, hardback and large print) on KDP (Amazon) and paperbacks at Ingram Spark whose distribution network includes 39,000 stores (bricks and mortar, and online) worldwide and also libraries.  In the not too distant future, I want to upload hardbacks and large prints to Ingram Spark as well.  If only there were 48 hours in a day!  

How Do I Prepare a Book for the Large Print Market?

There are a number of points to take into account when creating Large Print books:

Margins, Trim and Font Size

A 16 point font size is considered a minimum but 18 point is preferable.  Remember that no font size in the whole document should be less than 18.  This includes the copyright page, page numbers/headers and back cover blurb.
Use a sans-serif font like Tahoma or Verdana which is easier to read than a serif.  You’ll notice from the diagram below that the sans-serif font has no embellishments.
Margins should be 1″ at the top, bottom and both sides.  This will mean increasing the trim size (or physical size of the book) to accommodate more pages without it being unwieldy for the reader.

Text and Line Spacing

Use bold to accentuate text rather than italics or underlining and use black coloured text only.
Bulleted items should be double-spaced.
Do not use first line indentation which makes it difficult for visually impaired readers, and line spacing needs to be set at 1.5 or even higher.

Titles, Headings and Justification

Titles and headings need to have larger font sizes than your text.  Whereas most books are fully justified so that the right hand text is in line with the right margin, ensure your book has left-justified (ragged-right) text.  This prevents uneven gaps between words which is what happens with fully justified text.

Images

In the same way that titles and heading are left aligned, so are images.  There should be no text to the right of an image.  A partially sighted reader may not realise there’s any text beside the image.

Hyphens/Widows and Orphans

Ensure there are no hyphens at the end of text lines.  By using ragged-right text in your Large Print version, there will be far fewer to look out for.
Widows and orphans should be avoided at all costs.  This is where there are single lines from a paragraph at the top or bottom of a page. 

And Finally....

Cream paper is considered preferable to white because it gives off less glare so you might like to consider this.
As with any new format like hardbacks and audiobooks, you’ll need a new ISBN.  Buying your own is, in my opinion, the way forward if you want your books distributed as widely as possible.  For more information on ISBN’s, check out my blog.
Advanced software like Atticus can convert paperbacks into large print books in no time at all so this may be something to think about.
When uploading your book, don’t forget to tick the Large Print box in the Paperback details on KDP and at Ingram Spark, set the Edition Description to Large Print Edition.  Let your readers know your book is the Large Print version by adding a sticker to the cover like the one here:

What is Author Central?

When you publish a book on the Amazon KDP platform you can have your name hyperlinked direct to an Author Central page which holds information about you, such as your biography, the books you have published and other credentials.  It allows readers to get to know you and to follow you if they wish which means it can do wonders for your visibility and increase your readership.

Setting Up Your Page

Setting up an Author Central page is easy to do.  Go to authorcentral.amazon.com and click ‘Join Now’.  Use your KDP account to log in.  The name you enter should be the one that is on the cover of your book.  Claim your book/s and they will appear on your Author Central page.  If they do not, then you will need to contact Amazon.  Once your book is claimed, the your account will be activated.  Verify your account and you’re on your way!
Amazon allows you three names on your account.  For example, that could be your own name and two pen names.

Optimising Your Author Central Page

1. Start with a Sizzling Bio

Get started under the ‘Biography’ tab.  You should mention your books, credentials and some fun facts like this example from Victoria Schwab:

If this is your first book, then don’t worry.  You won’t have achieved best-seller status or professional accolades just yet!  All you need to add is a resumé about yourself and your self-publishing journey so far.  Your bio can be altered at at any time in the future.  If you have them set up, don’t forget to add your website, social media profiles and/or blogs to enable readers to find your presence outside Amazon.
Your bio should be at least 100 characters in length and once you’re happy with it, just click ‘Add Biography’ and boom!  You’re there!

2. Add a professional photo

It’s time to upload that photo of yourself.  Ensure that it’s a high quality, professionally produced profile  There’s no need to limit yourself to just one photo – you can use up to eight!  Some can be with you holding one of your books or attending literary events.  Be creative!  These additional photos don’t need to be of the same quality as your main photo but they still need to look good.  Go to ‘Profile’ at the top of your Author Central dashboard and then scroll down and you’ll see ‘Photos and Videos’ on the right hand side.

3. Create a Shareable URL

This is available on your amazon.com page only.
You can create a URL that you can share on your website and social media platforms that will take your potential readers direct to your Author Central page.  Surely that’s worth doing!  On your Author Central dashboard, go to ‘Profile’ at the top of the page and then on the right hand side of the page, click on  ‘Author Page URL’.  When you access this page, it’ll give you the instructions to set up this useful link.

4. Add Your Blog Posts

This is available on your amazon.com page only.
Imagine how good it would be if you could connect to your readers with your latest blog posts via your Author Central page.  Well, you can!  Head over to ‘Profile’ at the top of your dashboard and over to your right, go to ‘Manage blog feeds’.  When you ‘Add Feed’, this is not your website URL – it’s the RSS feed.

You may not be at the same level as Rick Riordan or have the same number of published books but I include this example to show what an author page could look like for you in the future.  It lists his publications, bio and blog posts.
Self-published authors have more input into what actually goes into their author pages compared with going through a traditional publishing house.
